DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION: THE MISCONCEIVED VALUES OF TODAY'S SOCIETY

Nowadays companies are talking about diversity. They want to prove to the public they embrace diversity and have made inclusivity one of their core values. Before we continue unravelling our thoughts, let's think for a bit. What is currently defined as diversity and inclusivity? --- Diversity: the practice or quality of including or involving people from a range of different social and ethnic backgrounds and of different genders, sexual orientations, etc. Inclusivity:  the practice or policy of providing equal access to opportunities and resources for people who might otherwise be excluded or marginalized, such as those having physical or mental disabilities or belonging to other minority groups. --- In a perfect society, diversity and inclusion would mean letting any person enter, or the chance to enter, a group of people. In such a world, we would not even think, nor be preoccupied, of other people's color, way of dressing, sexual orientation, gender, among many many others....

BURBERRY SS21 FASHION COLLECTION | FASHION DESIGNER Riccardo Tisci | WHEN LOVE CREATES MIRACLES | OutLoud

Fashion brand Burberry, SS21 collection by Riccardo Tisci. A stroll in nature? A sweet escape? An unfulfilled love? An experience!

So you came here for Burberry? You'll get Burberry, babe. I mean the whole of it. I mean the whole SS21 of it. A big applause for Riccardo Tisci, Anne Imhof and Eliza Douglas, everybodyy...

Yes! We witness a sustainably sourced, sustainably made, sustainable environment as a catwalk. It's nature! The show takes place in the middle of a forest, in the British countryside... accompanied by music... hard, wild, aggressive, emotional, mystical, ritualistic music....

First things first, water. That's right! Water! Do you drink enough.... water?

Can you guess what is a major concept behind Burberry SS21? Bingoo... Water!

Keep in mind that Burberry had historically had a deep connection with it. Thomas Burberry, the brand's founder, was also the one to invent the first water-resistant fabric -used in its signature trench coat- gabardine. Besides this, water is the ultimate symbol of life. As Riccardo Tisci said:

''The collection is called In Bloom because I was thinking about regeneration, about dynamic youth, about nature constantly recreating itself, always growing and evolving, always alive. Water is a symbol of that also – of newness, freshness and cleansing. And through water, life grows – water is what allows nature to bloom. Everything is circular."

And you know what comes with water? Love!

On most of the clothes we become spectators of something unique, unreal, unexpected and darkly romantic. A contemporary fairy tale takes place... A mermaid and a shark fall in love. Oohhh!

That is the reason behind the mythological and marine-inspired motifs, the fishnet-inspired mesh, the dominant blue, sandy beige and mariner orange, the fishermen-inspired over-the-knees boots and my need to eat sushi.

What sensation does this love give you?

Save it! Now, let's add another clue. We start the show with Anok Yai. She is getting dressed in a claustrophobic mirrored box. After she ''escapes'' -all dolled-up- and is finally ready to experience her freedom, men in black suits and sunglasses start following her.

What kind of sensation does this give you?

Ok! Now put these two sensations together... aaandd... What do you have? You have the feeling of quarantineee!!! The loneliness, the need for freedom and the absurdity of the whole situation. Riccardo Tisci definitely managed to channel his quarantine feeling into immense creativity and a beautiful collection.

Okk... Music!

Yeesss. It drives you crazy... I mean, good crazy... I kept singing along... screaming perpetual aahhs and uuhhhs... My neighbors must have loved it! Eliza Douglas -the epitome of the androgyny look- sings her soul out, with such an unexpressive expression... She was just capturing! It felt like the most authentic part of the show.. It could fill you with emotions... It could make you feel anxious, let off steam, cry, unleash, relax...depending on the state you were in when you first started watching...

... For sure that girl on 20:35, though, was feeling the moment, celebrating with a selfie... Was there a message behind this? A meaning? What was it? Are we so obsessed with our phones? Maybe ourselves? What do you wanna say? Say it, for God's shake... Burberry. Say it!

Okk... Let's relax... Paradoxically, though, all these consistent, periodical amounts of weirdness were also the ones that made the show less weird and more interesting as a whole. You made it Burberry. You created an experience...

It was clearly a show about experience. And that my friend is called Generation Z. Yeahh... They are the ones who are leading the experience oriented consumer behavior... The ones that are gonna become the affluent consumers of tomorrow... We know it, the world knows it and Burberry knows it... Proactivity at its best, let's say.

Now what? You wanna pick your outfit? Watch the full collection here. Are you gonna ever let me know which your favourite outfit was? Leave a comment below!
