DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION: THE MISCONCEIVED VALUES OF TODAY'S SOCIETY

Nowadays companies are talking about diversity. They want to prove to the public they embrace diversity and have made inclusivity one of their core values. Before we continue unravelling our thoughts, let's think for a bit. What is currently defined as diversity and inclusivity? --- Diversity: the practice or quality of including or involving people from a range of different social and ethnic backgrounds and of different genders, sexual orientations, etc. Inclusivity:  the practice or policy of providing equal access to opportunities and resources for people who might otherwise be excluded or marginalized, such as those having physical or mental disabilities or belonging to other minority groups. --- In a perfect society, diversity and inclusion would mean letting any person enter, or the chance to enter, a group of people. In such a world, we would not even think, nor be preoccupied, of other people's color, way of dressing, sexual orientation, gender, among many many others....

ALEXANDER MCQUEEN SS21 FASHION COLLECTION | FASHION DESIGNER Sarah Burton | Eerie corona & sustainability vibes | OutLoud

Fashion brand Dior, SS21 collection by Maria Grazia Chiuri. A still world that keeps moving through hidden progress!

McQueen SS21 by Sarah Burton. Could it be the ultimate interpretation of the coronavirus era?

Unfolding in the heart of London in an eerie environment, in the bleak banks of this murky river, Thames. Stillness. Deafening stillness, yet life goes on. Birds are flying...the river is flowing....yet people remain there. Still. When they move, they do out of boredom, out of the necessity for food, out of lust, out of their need to find that something they are looking for....with all the emotions that come with it. They even wave at each other from a distance. Does it ring a bell? Any chance quarantine has anything to do with it?

Clothes? Yes, they are wearing them! They throw them into mud, they drag them into the ''controversial'' waters of Thames. That controversial I couldn't keep myself from not commenting...

...anyway...! We pray for the girls' hygiene.

Carrying oonn....garments missed the ornamentation element the brand used to spoil us with. Stripped from decoration, they speak with shape, volumes and exaggerated silhouettes. Burton said:

“In many ways it felt like going back to the beginning for me, like it was in the early days at McQueen. At that time, we had less resources and all had to be very hands-on.”

Another remarkable trait? Clothes were created from stock fabric. Reinvented, reprinted, redyed and renewed. ''I believe that it is our responsibility to protect the things we love from the past, to preserve our values, signatures, and history, but it is also our job to innovate,” Burton said. She carried on:

“There is comfort in familiarity and excitement in experimentation. The two coexist.”

It is pleasing witnessing top luxury fashion brands setting the example. After all, sustainability is way much more than a trend or a marketing technique. Sustainability will prove fundamental for the survival of any brand in the long term. You ain' t started yet? Up, up, up....

..andd if you are not a brand, you could start by recycling!
