DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION: THE MISCONCEIVED VALUES OF TODAY'S SOCIETY

Nowadays companies are talking about diversity. They want to prove to the public they embrace diversity and have made inclusivity one of their core values. Before we continue unravelling our thoughts, let's think for a bit. What is currently defined as diversity and inclusivity? --- Diversity: the practice or quality of including or involving people from a range of different social and ethnic backgrounds and of different genders, sexual orientations, etc. Inclusivity:  the practice or policy of providing equal access to opportunities and resources for people who might otherwise be excluded or marginalized, such as those having physical or mental disabilities or belonging to other minority groups. --- In a perfect society, diversity and inclusion would mean letting any person enter, or the chance to enter, a group of people. In such a world, we would not even think, nor be preoccupied, of other people's color, way of dressing, sexual orientation, gender, among many many others....

PRADA SS21 FASHION COLLECTION | FASHION DESIGNERS Miuccia Prada & Raf Simons | A fresh start for the new Prada-ness | OutLoud

Fashion brand Prada, SS21 collection by Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons. Dive into a world whose mission is to stay relevant to society and offer high-end practicality through its uniform-approach!

Prada is a brand to swim in interesting waters in the future. The newly announced collaboration between Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons debuted in the Prada SS21 RTW collection. The past creative director of Jil Sander, Christian Dior and Calvin Klein joined his forces with Miuccia Prada. Together they present a show that stays in mind.

See for yourself.

The set is a lemon-yellowish-colored, curtained room designed by OMA and equipped with a bunch of cameras and screens. During the quarantine, Miuccia Prada realised technology is a vital part of our lives. And more than this...it is an extension of ourselves. And truth being said, we see that in the show... The cameras have a close, constant eye on the models, while the screens project the models' names, as they do their thing on the catwalk. And with their thing... I mean...

... Did you also feel that aggressive vibe by the models? What was that? They were, for sure, looking at the camera in an uncanny way. Moments such as 6:15 are gonna haunt us in our dreams.
What if I told you all models had their first catwalk appearance?
What a first impression, right? These eerie looks, though, were also the ones that made us feel we are there. That connection they built was enough to make us even more engaged with the show. Just that extra touch to the already capturing essence of the clothes..

...the clothes...

Before we go there, let's state some views shared in the after-the-show conversation of Raf Simons and Miuccia Prada. As stated by Simons:

''Prada-ness is a kind of community that has a very specific attitude, intellect, aesthetic... You can't really define what it is, but you feel it exists. Clearly there!''

Miuccia Prada shared a core belief and guiding factor of her work:

''A piece of clothing serves the rule of making you feel better. It's for you and for your life.''

And life now faces a tremendous amount of complexity. As she explains, ''In a time of incredible complexity: What matters? What is meaningful? That is a question we asked ourselves. We wanted to create something that makes sense to people, something that is useful. Everything we do should allow people to live better.” And that my friends is the essence of this collection and fashion, as a whole, in this day and age. It is not about creating something new. It is about staying relevant to people's lives and, at the end of the day, make their lives better.

Another core element? U-N-I-F-O-R-M. As Simons stated to WWD: “I was thinking of how I have perceived Prada over 25 years, and one thing that came out instantly was uniform. A uniform gives a sense of community. In a context of reduction, the idea of a uniform is a representation of longevity. In all honesty, I have been looking at Miuccia, how she is dressed, her uniform. It is what she finds important.”

"You find something that you feel good in and know you express what you want to express. This is the uniform. It needs to express something timeless. It is your base.''

And this is how the show begins, my friends. Showing the Prada-ness at each essence, with core items that create the New Prada Uniform. Long trousers, tunic-length cloaks, with the brand's big logo right below the neckline.... and for shoeeess... some kitten heels!

What else do we see?
  • We see the characteristic clutch coat - an element long existing in Pradas history and further explored by Simons in his last collection at Jil Sander.
  • We see the emblematic ''ugly prints'' -of Prada's 1996 show- on both hoodies and skirts.
  • We see Peter de Potter graphic designs on satin shift dresses.
  • We see holey turtlenecks that are excessively used as extra layers to complete the looks.
Do you see what I see?

No?
