DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION: THE MISCONCEIVED VALUES OF TODAY'S SOCIETY

Nowadays companies are talking about diversity. They want to prove to the public they embrace diversity and have made inclusivity one of their core values. Before we continue unravelling our thoughts, let's think for a bit. What is currently defined as diversity and inclusivity? --- Diversity: the practice or quality of including or involving people from a range of different social and ethnic backgrounds and of different genders, sexual orientations, etc. Inclusivity:  the practice or policy of providing equal access to opportunities and resources for people who might otherwise be excluded or marginalized, such as those having physical or mental disabilities or belonging to other minority groups. --- In a perfect society, diversity and inclusion would mean letting any person enter, or the chance to enter, a group of people. In such a world, we would not even think, nor be preoccupied, of other people's color, way of dressing, sexual orientation, gender, among many many others....

You saw these people sitting so close with each other on the set? Before you get too judgmental, listen to me. They are all employees, like you and me! All tested and corona-free. Now that I put you off this agony, let's carry on with the juice!

The catwalk evidently takes place in a mysterious utopian world imagined as the ruins of Atlantis, ruled by Medusa and inhabited by sexy, colorful creatures. As Donatella Vercase said, “Fashion is about dreaming and the most instinctive answer to what we are all going through is the desire to create a new world.”

And that’s exactly what she did! On top of this, she managed to stay true to Versace's DNA by reinterpreting the 'Trésor de la Mer' motifs from Gianni Versace’s collection for Spring 1992. The main challenge the designer faced, as she admits, was giving meaning to fashion in moments like this. People feel the need to escape in an imaginary, utopian world. So, they should better take one, she thought! Versaceapolis! I must say, the sand runway, the mythical statuary and the crumbling columns, for sure did their job.

And the clooothees. Of course.

An explosion of colors and starfish, coral and seashell motifs. Jellyfish-bouncing flounce-hem dresses and cascading skirts with ruffles that reminds us of squids. A superior craftsmanship combinating prints and the plissé fabric - a technique not much used by the brand before. Suits with sport-like separates and overwhelmingly captivating clam-shell bras, only the sea world elite could pull off. Bags? The Medusa bag parading gracefully in colors from dark blue till deep red and soft lilac.

Did you take notice? The brand makes big, baby steps in major concepts such as inclusion and sustainability.

There are models of various sizes and body types. From brand regulars, such as Joan Smalls, Jill Kortleve and Irina Shayk, till new, exciting faces like Alva Claire and Precious Lee. We see men and women all parading together blurring the lines of gender limits. Does this remind us of Louis Vuitton SS21? As Donatella stated:

“I wanted to create something disruptive, something that could be in tune with what has changed inside all of us. To me that meant dreaming of a new world. A world made of popping colors and fantastic creatures and a world in which we can all coexist peacefully.”

She imagines a world of ''inclusion, mutual support, and acceptance of what is different.”

And could we even imagine a future world without touching the concept of sustainability? Na-ah!

Donatella's ambitions on this subject manifested through organic cotton and recycled polyester and polyamide.

Not bad, right?
