DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION: THE MISCONCEIVED VALUES OF TODAY'S SOCIETY

Nowadays companies are talking about diversity. They want to prove to the public they embrace diversity and have made inclusivity one of their core values. Before we continue unravelling our thoughts, let's think for a bit. What is currently defined as diversity and inclusivity? --- Diversity: the practice or quality of including or involving people from a range of different social and ethnic backgrounds and of different genders, sexual orientations, etc. Inclusivity:  the practice or policy of providing equal access to opportunities and resources for people who might otherwise be excluded or marginalized, such as those having physical or mental disabilities or belonging to other minority groups. --- In a perfect society, diversity and inclusion would mean letting any person enter, or the chance to enter, a group of people. In such a world, we would not even think, nor be preoccupied, of other people's color, way of dressing, sexual orientation, gender, among many many others....

GIVENCHY SS21 FASHION COLLECTION | Fashion Designer Matthew Williams | SOME SENSE OF PERSONALITY, HARDWARE AND EDGE | OutLoud

Fashion brand Givenchy, SS21 collection by Matthew Williams. A new hardware, edgy sense, ready to humanize luxury -and vice versa- and make personality stand out!

Okie dokie! This is a serious case guys. I want your full attention. This is the first collection of fashion designer Matthew Williams for Givenchy fashion house. Whaaa!? He is the one who took the reins since Clare Waight Keller's departure in April 2020. The new designer -and founder of the fashion brand 1017 Alyx 9SM- had 2 months to create this collection. He characteristically referred to it as a 'sampler' of things to come. Let's see a teaser then of what is the new foundation Givenchy is about to lay upon.

First things first, what we see is a lookbook shot by Heji Shin, directed by Peter Miles Studio and styled by Lotta Volkova. And in case it is not enough for you, I totally get you. That is why you are gonna have an early treat. Click here to watch the full Givenchy SS21 fashion collection.

Keywords include hardware, edge, sexiness & bags!

“It’s no secret that I’m really into hardware, and that’s what I lay the foundation with when I start a new project. It comes into shoes, bags, clothing,” Matthew said. So he ''invented'' the ''Lover's Lock''. It is the must-have accessory for both men and women inspired by the lovebirds of Paris who lock their love and throw the keys in the Seine. Romantic and hard at the same time! Right? Givenchy ''G'' also has its role to play in this concept! We see it on chunky link chains in belts, bag straps and necklaces. Oh these necklaces!

Now... What was the philosophy behind that new beginning? What is Matthew Williams all about?

As the designer stated:
“You find the pieces of the puzzle for a collection, building it from symbols and signs, but never forgetting the reality of the person who will wear it and bring it to life. The women and men should be powerful and effortless, equal and joyful, a reflection of who they really are – only more so. It’s about finding the humanity in luxury.”

And as we all may know, humanity hides various juxtapositions. Right? So as the Givenchy SS21 fashion collection! Technical materials are balanced with more traditional ones, rich design is mixed with simplistic one, formal is matched with casual. “To me, fashion expresses a point of view where formality and informality, construction and comfort co-exist. My ethos is about the luxury of infusing clothes with your own personality, not being worn by them,” said Matthew Williams. And the personalities that had the chance to infuse themselves into the Givenchy SS21 fashion collection were Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid, Playboi Carti, Anok Yai and Liam Powers. As Matthew shared,“In each of these portraits, a strong character wears a look that reflects who they are: they’re the ones who bring the clothes to life.”

And did you even think there was a chance the designer would not take past references into consideration?
  • The great founder, Hubert de Givenchy, inspired the meticulous tailoring, its elevated-shoulder-sense and the balloon-like dimensions.
  • Lee McQueen contributed with horn-shaped, tryp-toe heels & caps, reptilian metallic leathers and excessive pagoda shoulders -Balmain-SS21-likish
  • Riccardo Tisci became present through the Nat Geo prints, the crystal-embellished hoodies and the chiffon gowns.
Did you miss the 2000s? Well, we also see outbursts of that era and whatever comes with it. And by this I mean: knotted halter-necks, low-rise cigarette trousers, G-strings screaming 'pikaboo' from the backless cut-out gowns... andddd.... some nude-chested men wearing scarlet leather speedos. I mean... was it necessary? Mmmm... Yes it was!

What else does stand out?
Well... I told you, silly! The Bags! They do kind of stand out, right? Matthew Williams offers us his interpretation of the Antigona bag and spoils us with a new unisex Cut-Out bag.

What else?
  • Transparent materials contradicted with metal.
  • Dressy and industrial garments that look like they have been through their 'Odyssey' before coming out.
  • Cummerbunds as a sci-fi mid-layer addition.
  • Tank tops transforming into draped blouses for men.
As Matthew explained:
“I’m not a person who designs in themes. It’s very much product-focused. A lot of it is what I would wear personally.”

So, I guess all these elements reveal enough of the edgy, hardware personality of the new designer, and for sure make us anticipate what's coming next. Well, the Givenchy FW21 fashion collection is already out, in case you wanna have a sneaky look. We'll most probably come to it later on the show, you pretty little you!

Till next time... Babaii!
